Man Bites Dog (1992)

Remy Belvaux passed away September 4th, 2006 at the age of 38. He left behind one of the most thought-provoking movies ever produced. At the age of 24, he and his friend Andre Bonzel directed a movie of shocking humor and startling violence. Benoit Poelvoorde was their then unknown star. Today he is one of France's leading men. Based upon their short film of the same circumstances, Benoit plays Ben, Remy plays Remy, and Andre plays Andre. Remy and Andre are documentary filmmakers following lunatic-funnyman-philosopher-hitman Ben around town as he works and waxes rhetorical. The movie is the blackest of comedies, often considered offensive and excessive, it's point can be easily overlooked. Belvaux and Bonzel question who is an audience, who is an actor, how much is too much? Can a documentary filmmaker ever truly remain objective about his subject and with his own actions? "Man Bites Dog" towers over all other fake documentaries in its message and effectiveness.   A
